The rights at stake for asylum-seekers could not be more serious: a mistaken rejection means they are deported back to persecution - in some cases this means torture or even death. Our goal is to mitigate human error in the decision-making process so that genuine refugees receive protection.

Asylum-seekers most need help in asserting their legal right to refugee status - a right set out in international law. Refugees are not victims but rather rights-holders. Availability of legal assistance is crucial to assuring that right is meaningful one.

With status, refugees can access education, medical care, employment, and housing elsewhere - in short, get on with the work of rebuilding their lives. Legal assistance is more effective than handouts.

Yet all refugee claimants are heavily dependent on legal aid projects because they do not have sufficient financial resources to retain legal counsel on their own. We are the only organization in Hong Kong dedicated to providing legal representation to asylum-seekers for their refugee claims.
